One of the top sightseeing in Barcelona is the Mercado de la Boqueria on La Rambla. A fruit and vegetable market that is not only popular with tourists in Barcelona. You can also find a lot of Spanish locals here, which is directly a good sign. No wonder, because markets have tradition in Spain and are often considered a social meeting place.

After my experience in Bangkok at the Chatuchak market, I was curious how the market in Barcelona would be. Would it be just as organized a choas as in Thailand? The main entrance to the Mercado de la Boqueria market is right on the popular and busy shopping street in Barcelona, La Rambla.

It’s basically a large hall, or indoor market, between houses and an absolute “must see” in Barcelona. I couldn’t resist and took a lot of photos, soaking up the Mercado de la Boqueria vibe.

The colorful market stalls were each in itself a top photo backdrop and certainly make themselves in every photo album to a popular memory. You can also find the Mercado de la Boqueria market listed as Mercat de la Boqueria. Basically, you can’t miss it if you are a tourist walking from the port to the old town.

What can you find at the “Mercado de la Boqueria”?

At the Mercado de la Boqueria market you can find everything fresh that you can eat and dream of. A wide selection of fresh fruit, crisp vegetables, fresh meat, dried bacon and freshly caught fish. Likewise, you can find pretty looking sweets, which are ideal as a souvenir.

Visually, I was thrilled by the tall fruit towers, plus the cute lollipops with Barcelona inscriptions – too cute! As far as I could observe, most tourists bought a lot of fruit drinks and freshly cut fruit cups at the Mercat de la Boqueria, in addition to a few tapas. Similar to what I had seen before in Thailand, you can find many cups of freshly cut fruit in different variations and combinations at the Mercado de la Boqueria.

Tips for the Mercado de la Boqueria market in Barcelona

If I were you, I would rather go to the popular market early in the morning to avoid the big tourist crowds. The crowds at the market are not small and surely there are not only honest buyers. I can also recommend you to walk one or two rows next to the main rows. There are also significantly fewer tourists on the road. Please be careful with your handbags and photo bags.

Fortunately, you were allowed to photograph quite freely on the Mercat de Sankt Josep market during my visit, I have experienced more problematic on other markets. Therefore, I was able to take some nice pictures for you, which reflect the mood at the Mercado de la Boqueria market a little better. I found the mixture of hustle and bustle and system somehow fascinating and was able to live out my preference for colorful markets again.

If you’re out and about in Barcelona and heading towards La Rambla, you’ll find the entrance to the market not far from the Columbus statue. A report on the La Rambla, and what you should really urgently consider there as a tourist, you can find on my travel blog. There are some stores and sightseeing, as well as insider tips to Barcelona, which I would like to tell you.

I hope you can enjoy your visit to the market as much as I did. I personally bought nothing at the market, but if then I would have found at the sweets and fresh fruit stalls. My daily schedule was already planned differently, but in the afterward I would have liked to take one of the colorful Barcelona Lollis as a reminder of the Mercado de la Boqueria.
