My tour of Bangkok’s Lumpini Park on a beautiful morning. After spending the night at Le Royal Meridien Hotel Plaza Athenee in Bangkok, it was only a 10 minute walk to Lumphini Park Bangkok – I just had to see this park.

I try to check out the local park every time I’m in a new city. Almost exactly 12 months ago, I walked through Central Park in New York at -5°C. Now I’m in Lumpini Park in Bangkok at 32°C in the morning – what a pleasant change.

How Lumpini Park came about

Lumpini Park Bangkok was opened to the public in the 1920s by King Vajravudh (Rama VI) on his land and named after the birthplace of Buddha in Nepal. When Lumpini Park was opened almost 100 years ago, it was located on the outskirts of Bangkok. Today it is one of the most frequented places in the city of Bangkok.

Tips for visiting

If you want to visit Lumpini Park Bangkok, you should do it early in the morning (from 7 am) and watch the locals doing Tai Chi or in the late afternoon (from 5 pm) doing aerobic exercises.

For me, 7am was too early 🙂 and in the afternoon I was no longer in the area, so 11am was an “ideal” solution and I had the park almost to myself. A few bodybuilders, a few people on the 2.5km jogging path and a few monitor lizards looking for food.

Conclusion – Lumpini Park

It’s a special place, completely different from other parks and if you stay at Le Royal Meridien Hotel Plaza Athenee, you should really walk into the park, past authentic Thai food with various stalls, the US Embassy in Bangkok and many small local stores. Just enjoy Bangkok.
