Can I imagine switching from Canon to Sony? For years I have been associated with Canon for my photographic equipment and I have been an absolutely loyal user. I have experienced every stage of development of digital cameras and was always happy about new cameras. However, even with time, demands and requirements change. I decided to switch from Canon to Sony. You don’t do something like that without thinking it through and I’ll show you which cameras and lenses I chose.
Switching from Canon to SONY
When I bought the 1DX Mark III from Canon and put it in my photo backpack I was so proud. My camera equipment had grown tremendously in the meantime. I also celebrated my favorite lens, the 85mm f1.2. Nevertheless, subconsciously I already had a funny feeling. Do I really have the best possible photo equipment for me?
I have been thinking for a while whether a change to from Canon to SONY would not be better. Out of loyalty to Canon, I have nevertheless held on to the brand for my photo equipment. However, in the video area and especially in difficult lighting conditions, the Canon equipment always performed worse than a SONY camera in every test. The Canon camera also weakened in terms of technical capabilities and imagery compared to the SONY variants.
Changing photo equipment – switching from Canon to Sony
A hard switch of photo equipment, a switch from Canon to Sony that was extremely challenging for myself, but I was at a point where I was more than ready. I really changed everything completely. All bodies, all lenses and even new microphones to boot. To make it even more exciting I also changed my video editing program from Adobe Premiere to Final Cut Pro. If I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it… and then I want to use the new equipment directly on my first trips.
I considered several times where I should sell my equipment for the change from Canon to Sony best and whether I should not really rather still hold with a few Canon lenses and a body as backup, but I wanted to change completely.
Especially in the fast moving times and the many changes that have occurred in the photo world, you just look for a brand that also listens to a large photo community and where you get new updates or enhancements every year. The current devices are not outdated and are still adequate, but new – helpful features – are always being added at SONY. While at Canon, you get the feeling in recent years that more emphasis has been placed on security and familiar development, rather than new innovations.
Sure, it’s not easy to change all your photo equipment – and the financial loss should be taken into account, but often photo products are bought at fair prices from dealers, especially if you want to buy new equipment. Just give it a try!
At the moment I’m still getting used to the new setting options and how to assign my buttons optimally for me. I feel now after the change from Canon to Sony again “suitable” and know the decision was once again exactly right (for me). Sometimes you just have to trust your feelings and make decisions.
Even if it was really very unfamiliar at first and you certainly missed some settings and familiar workflows in the first few weeks, it was a decision that I have regretted only at one point so far – not to leave Canon much earlier and switch to Sony for my photo equipment.
So you will find in the coming weeks and months still many ideas of new products from SONY on my pages and I give you again honest assessments for whom the products are worthwhile. Of course, I also have some new tips for YouTube beginners and professionals.
But is it worth switching from Canon to Sony? Absolutely! Today, looking back, I can say it was a very good decision and many things have become much easier. If you have any questions about switching from Canon to Sony, feel free to send me an email or contact me on Twitter.
